“Artist-run-space merdre” is run by an artist couple Utako Shibatsuji-Perrin and Stephane Shibatsuji-Perrin, located about 30 minutes by train from the central Tokyo. The building is about a 200㎡ Japanese traditional house. Artists can enjoy Japanese contemporary art scene in Tokyo and also concentrate on their creations in a calm environment in the outskirts of Tokyo.
Utako is originally an animation director and also an educator. She provides business startup courses for artists. She teaches marketing, branding, writing and mind set. She also allows residents to connect with her vast creative community.
From 1month to up to 6 months. We are closed during the summer.
Residency fee will be calculated in one-month periods.
There are no preconditions for acceptance in terms of field of artistic activity, age, nationality, etc., but the applicant MUST:
Applicants wishing to apply as a pair or group, or who wish to use the facilities in different combinations to those assigned should contact us beforehand. Please note that there will be an additional charge for those applying as a pair or group.

The deadline of applications is 6 months before the preferred month to start resident.
All artists accepted will be expected to confirm the dates of their residency, sign a contract, and pay a deposit of 100,000 yen within one month of the date of contract.
Applications are accepted by email. Applications should contain the following: official application form, a proposal outlining your activities during the residency, CV and a portfolio of artistic activities. The application form can be downloaded here:
